If you are like me, your jewelry box is full of a multitude of metals, fine and costume- grade. There are heirloom pieces passed down through my family as well as gifts from others through the years. Because of this, my jewelry box contains many colors of metals.
In spite of this, I do have a favorite color of jewelry metal which I wear every day: It is the color silver. I have sterling silver jewelry. My gold jewelry is predominately white gold. I find platinum too heavy for my tastes, although the steely grey color looks just as nice as white gold against my olive skin tone. Still, when I am in the mood, or my outfit calls for it, I wear jewelry metals of other colors. It's just that silver-tone metals are the most complimentary on me. How do I know?
Back in the 1980s, I had a color analysis done and I am a Winter. (Updated color theory suggests different levels of Winter-warm or cool-but I'll stick with what learned back then.) If you are not sure what jewelry metal color best suits your skin tone, assess your own color "season." That is, are you a Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter? If you have never done this, I found a great little quiz at SelectSmart.com by Nathan Taylor to help you. You can take the quiz here. He actually tells what color of gold jewelry looks best on women of each season.
Just a note here from a seasoned nonconformist: If you take Nathan Taylor's quiz at SelectSmart.com and are disappointed by the outcome, don't despair. No matter what the quiz tells you, or any other color profile you undergo, wear any color jewelry or fashions that make you feel good and that you identify with. Color profiles are merely suggestions. They are guidelines to help you discover complimentary colors you may not have thought to wear before. However, the word "never" shouldn't exist in fashion.
That rule goes for your jewelry, too. Just because white gold looks great on those with Winter profiles, doesn't mean you can't wear it if you have a Spring or Summer color profile. They are merely guides. Not rules set in stone. Be true to your inner muse. She will never let you down!
