The Persian rug in my living room, which was a beautiful showpiece in its day, is now so worn and ratty looking, it was making the whole room, including my antique accessories, look like junk. I spent two hours carefully orchestrating the rug's removal. (Deep down, I feel if I had just opened the front door and given it an invitation to do so, it would have got up and walked away on its own!) Once I cleaned the hardwood floor, I was ready to replace the old behemoth.
I purchased a brand new, much smaller rug for the middle of the room. It's burgundy with no pattern. The results surprised me. My antique accessories look fabulous in contrast to this simple, modern rug. Even my couch and loveseat, which have seen better days, look newer than they are.
This lesson of combining old with new for fantastic results is exactly what happens when you wear vintage jewelry with your modern wardrobe pieces. The contrast is exciting and captivating. If you haven't incorporated vintage jewelry into your daily look, you are missing out on an opportunity to be stunning and unique. Here are some of my favorite vintage pieces to give you inspiration:
Look at this gorgeous vintage green crystal necklace and matching bracelet. The set is from the 1930s. Can't you envision a movie star wearing it? This set would look fabulous with both casual and dressy attire. I sold this set a few years back, but I confess; I wish I had kept it!
This silver tone Emmons necklace from the 1950s with its bold black cabochons is one of my favorite vintage pieces to wear. It is especially striking when worn with black and white outfits. It has an exotic, tribal element about it. I love to wear it when I want to make a bold statement. I never fail to receive complements on it.
This is a classic 1950's style silver tone choker from Lisner. I find it so elegant and sophisticated. It is rhodium plated so it still looks as good as it did when it was brand new. I love wearing this necklace when I want to add a touch of style to my outfit, even dress down days when I'm wearing jeans.
These fantastic zebra-inspired Eisenberg enamel clip earrings are from the 1970s. They are just as attractive now as they were some forty years ago!
Have I convinced you wear more vintage jewelry with your modern attire yet? Vintage jewelry pieces worn with our modern attire make a one-of-a-kind statement. These fabulous pieces just pop against today's fashions.
